Depending on traffic, Kennesaw is only about a half-hour from Atlanta, but it’s a city worth exploring all on its own. From family-friendly attractions to historic sites, there’s plenty to see and do in this vibrant Georgian city. Here are our favorite ways to spend a day in Kennesaw!

Southern Museum of Civil War and Locomotive History
What Is It? This is a great museum to learn about two things at once: the southern railroad expansion and the Civil War.
Why Do It? You can browse a fascinating collection of artifacts and relics from the American Civil War, as well as from railroads of the state of Georgia and surrounding regions.
Good to Know:Make sure to see the Great Locomotive Chase, Glover Machine Works, and other exciting exhibits.

Kennesaw Mountain National Battlefield Park
What Is It? Another historic place to learn about Kennesaw is the National Battlefield Park.
Why Do It? This is a 2,965-acre Civil War battlefield with reenactments, a museum, and weekend ranger talks.
Good to Know:Since there are no entrance or parking fees, this is a great spot for budget-minded travelers.

Stone Summit Climbing Gym
What Is It? There’s an awesome rock climbing gym called Stone Summit that draws in locals from all over the Atlanta Metro Area.
Why Do It? You can bring your own gear or rent it out from the gym, and you’ll probably want to take a belay lesson if you’re new to climbing.
Good to Know:Yoga, Pilates, and abs classes are also offered at the Kennesaw if you want to squeeze in an extra workout.

Burnt Hickory Brewery
What Is It? After an epic day of sightseeing, there’s nothing quite as refreshing as a cold, local brew.
Why Do It? Stop by Burnt Hickory Brewery to try local favorites like Ezekiel’s Wheel Pale Ale and the Fighting Bishop Belgian Style Triple.
Good to Know:Located at 2260 Moon Station Court #210, this brewery has been on the scene since 2011.

Big Shanty Festival
What Is It? If you can only visit Kennesaw once, make sure it’s in April because that’s when the Big Shanty Festival kicks off downtown.
Why Do It? The festival is free to attend and typically has over 250 booths set up with food vendors, arts and crafts merchants, and live entertainment.
Good to Know:Don’t miss the parade with floats and high school bands!
