Flyers' Eetu Makiniemi: Trying out with Philadelphia

    3d ago

Makiniemi signed a professional tryout agreement with the Flyers on Thursday, per his agency.

Makiniemi split last season between the AHL and ECHL affiliates in the Sharks' organization. At the AHL level, he recorded a 3.14 GAA and a .900 save percentage with three shutouts in 18 games. The Flyers appear to be doing their part to shore up their goaltending depth for the preseason, and Makiniemi could get an AHL contract or two-way deal should Aleksei Kolosov end up going on loan to the KHL's Dinamo Minsk.

  • Arturs Silovs VAN G

Silovs has knee ligament inflammation and will not play for Latvia in the 2026 Olympic qualifiers, Patrick Johnston of the Province reports Thursday.

After being left off of Latvia's roster on Wednesday, there's now a reason behind Silovs' removal from the team. In Latvia's press release, they made note that this injury would prevent Silovs from performing to the highest of his capabilities. It'll be something to monitor, but this could imply that Silovs' injury isn't overly serious, but rather more of a precautionary move. The 23-year-old is expected to be Thatcher Demko's top backup in Vancouver for the 2024-25 season, who is also currently dealing with a lingering knee issue.

Blackhawks' Laurent Brossoit: Could miss start of season

    4d ago

Brossoit underwent successful surgery Tuesday to repair the meniscus in his right knee, according to Tracey Myers of NHL.com.

Fresh off of signing a two-year, $6.6 million contract with Chicago in July, Brossoit will likely miss training camp with the potential of starting the season on the shelf. This news comes as a surprise, so Brossoit's recovery will be something to monitor as the season approaches. The 31-year-old has been one of the more capable NHL backup netminders over the last few years, so it's possible he could challenge Petr Mrazek for the starting gig when healthy. Brossoit went 15-5-2 with a .927 save percentage and a 2.00 GAA with Winnipeg in 2023-24.

Sharks' Yaroslav Askarov: Signs extension after trade

    9d ago

Askarov signed a two-year, $4 million contract with the Sharks on Friday, per PuckPedia.

Askarov was acquired in a trade with the Predators earlier in the day, and general manager Mike Grier didn't waste any time in getting the goalie into the Sharks' plans through 2026-27. The 22-year-old goalie is 1-1-0 with six goals allowed on 70 shots over three NHL appearances. Expect Askarov to have every chance to win the No. 1 job in San Jose in training camp, and if he proves to be NHL ready, he could jump-start the team's rebuild.

Sharks' Yaroslav Askarov: On his way to San Jose

    9d ago

The Sharks acquired Askarov, Nolan Burke and Colorado's 2025 third-round pick from the Predators in exchange for David Edstrom, Magnus Chrona and a conditional 2025 first-round selection Friday.

Askarov is the jewel of the trade, as he was selected 11th overall in the 2020 Draft by the Predators and has shone thus far in his professional career. Askarov was outstanding with AHL Milwaukee in 2023-24, going 30-13-1 with a 2.39 GAA and a .911 save percentage. He also saw action in a pair of NHL games last season, going 1-0-0 while giving up a pair of goals on 35 shots. Entering training camp, Askarov should be in contention to grab the top job with the Sharks, ahead of Mackenzie Blackwood and Vitek Vanecek.
